Pharmacogenetics links an individual’s ability to metabolize drugs to their genetic profiles. This type of testing can provide physicians with information regarding a patient’s genetic ability to metabolize certain drugs, allowing for a more personal and effective prescription regimen. Patients can be prescribed drugs for a multitude of reasons, and it is important that the patient receives not only the appropriate medication, but that the medication is also appropriately effective. Serious conditions such as depression, cardiovascular treatment, or addiction treatment can be drastically affected by an inefficient drug regimen. By understanding a patient’s individual ability to metabolize drugs, an ordering physician can appropriately select the medication that has the potential for the most success.
Who should be tested:
The Medical Management Panel is especially valuable for patients:
• Taking multiple medications
• Not Getting full benefit from medications
• Taking warfarin (Coumadin) or Clopidogrel(Plavix)
• With cancer, psychiatric symptoms or other conditions
where “trial and error” prescribing carries a risk.
• With unexplained symptoms
